The closing night of the 79th Cannes Film Festival brought a massive win for Bulgarian cinema. The Dreamed Adventure, a gripping drama set entirely in the rugged borderlands of Bulgaria, was honored with the prestigious Jury Prize at the Palais des Festivals.
Directed by acclaimed German filmmaker Valeska Grisebach, the film represents a historic milestone. It is the first time in over half a century that a project rooted so deeply in Bulgaria has competed in the main festival lineup for the highest honor, the Palme d'Or.
Deep Layers and Borderline Dangers
Co-produced by Miramar Film alongside partners in Germany, France, and Austria, the project serves as a masterclass in authentic, regional storytelling. Grisebach chose the southern border town of Svilengrad, a unique geographic crossroads where Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey meet, as her primary canvas.
The story follows Veska, played by Yana Radeva. She is an archaeologist working at a local excavation site whose quiet life is disrupted when she crosses paths with an old acquaintance. As a deep, unexplainable emotional bond rekindles between them, Veska willingly steps into the line of fire. Taking his place in a high-stakes, illegal smuggling operation, she is forced to navigate the dangerous criminal undercurrents lurking just beneath the surface of the quiet town, while simultaneously facing long-buried truths about her own past.
The Power of Authenticity
What makes The Dreamed Adventure truly stand out is its commitment to realism:
-
Local Cast: True to her signature style, Grisebach bypassed traditional movie stars, casting local non-professional actors to bring raw, unpolished authenticity to the screen.
-
Behind the Camera: Beyond the local faces on screen, the production relied on a predominantly Bulgarian crew to capture the unique texture and atmosphere of the region.
-
A Shared European History: Grisebach noted that the film's inspiration came from conversations with locals who lived through the sweeping political shifts of 1989, exploring how those historical divides still echo through the edge of Europe today.
By blending a tense crime narrative with a deeply personal character study, The Dreamed Adventure successfully captivated the Cannes jury, solidifying its place as one of the standout cinematic achievements of the year.
